The first paper ""Workers: Stakeholders in productivity in a changing global environment"" prepared by Arturo L. Tolentino provides an overview of globalization and the increased importance of productivity in such a highly competitive environment. The paper emphasizes that workers, far from being passive stakeholders, are in fact major actors at national and enterprise levels in the pursuit of improved productivity. The new roles of labour in the changed economic environment are explored and the various possible ways for workers participation in productivity improvement are presented. The paper ""Labour Relations and Productivity"" of Mr. Tayo Fashoyin is concerned with the role of labour relations in promoting productivity and competitiveness. It examines how the various aspects and elements of the labour relation process impacts on productivity and emphasizes the importance of labour-management cooperation through bipartite and tripartite strategies. The paper ""Productivity Improvement and International Labour Standards: Interaction for development"" by Mr. Alexander Egorov presents the view that productivity and International Labour Standards (ILS) are complementary, if not symbiotic and that sustained observance of labour standards is impossible without continuing improvement in productivity, and high productivity cannot be achieved and maintained in the long term under poor labour standards. It emphasizes that full, productive and freely chosen employment is the key to national productivity and sustainable development. The relevant International Labour Standards are presented and the increasing synergy between ILS and productivity is analysed. ""Workers` Participation in Productivity Improvement at Enterprise, Sector and National Levels: the Singapore Experience"" prepared by Dr. Linda Low examines how workers participate at various levels -national, sectoral and enterprise levels- to improve productivity. It includes examining the socio-political context i.e. environmental factors for worker participation and the mechanisms and means by which workers can participate in productivity improvement, at different levels, in some countries. It also presents a brief case study of of workers` participation in Singapore and summarises the factors which will potentially contribute to effective worker participation in productivity improvement. An example of bipartite cooperation in productivity improvement is presented in the paper ""Norway`s Social Partners` Joint Action Programme for Enterprise Development"".
