It does not describe a new management fad but covers numerous techniques, tactics, and strategies to achieve superior performance. The book begins by discussing learning and its critical relationship to organizational health and well-being. The author tells us what a learning organization is and gives examples of organizational learning. Part II discusses an issue that is critical to both TQM and learning environments - the empowerment of employees - because it is here that these two approaches find their vital link. In five chapters, we find an exploration of employee focus intended to establish an empowered organization, including incentives, motivation, education and training, and leadership roles. In Part III, the author explores teams and participation, diving into issues of self-management, cross-functionality, team formation and the like. Part IV describes factors essential to successful restructuring as it explores alliances, joint ventures, and benchmarking, and offers examples of business process reengineering at Lotus, Ford, IBM, Boeing, and others. Also highlighted are flexible manufacturing, concurrent engineering and functional integration. In Part V the author discusses innovations in supply chain management, outsourcing and a number of specific global economic issues. Part VI provides insight into the changing definition of prpductivity and discusses the shift from efficiency to effectiveness that marks the new wave of process-focused management methods. This section includes discussions of an important new tool - data envelopment analysis - as well as activity-based costing, cycle time reduction, and just-in-time applications. In Part VII, the author emphasizes customer focus as it relates to new product management. In this section there is also a chapter that highlights issues related to the trend toward `knowledge-based` products and services.
