Sharing of 5S and Kaizen experiences

The National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC) is organising a seminar in collaboration with the Japan Productivity Center to share the outcomes and experiences of implementing tools such as 5S and Kaizen in enterprises for productivity improvement. This project is the second phase of the Technical Cooperation Project on Productivity Improvement to African Nations undertaken by the Japanese Government in collaboration with the Pan African Productivity Association (PAPA). The session will be held at the conference room of the NPCC, 4th floor, Alexander House, Cyber City, Ebene, Reduit from 13:15-14:30 presentation by the companies showcasing their productivity improvements followed by panel discussions on Successful key factors for the implementation model company project in Mauritius.

The model company project is a NPCC consultancy project to support enterprises in enhancing productivity. The projects involved sensitisation, capacity building of employees and pilot projects, involving the employees and agreed with the company management, focusing on key needs of the respective companies. The projects focused on:

  • elimination of waste or muda in the production processes to improve production flow and time to deliver to clients,

  • implementation of 5S to improve production management and enhance the capability to identify problems promptly,

  • enhance management through productivity measurement and analysis of indicators, and

  • establishment of operation standards.

The project benefits can be measured in terms of reduction of time to deliver to clients, monetary savings, reduction of quality problems and the companies capability to apply 5S and Kaizen on their own. Three companies have been involved in this second phase of the project: The Food and Allied Group, RT Knits and Thon des Mascareignes.

The Japan Productivity Center (JPC) delegated twice during the year two Japanese experts Mr Katsushi Honda and Kenichi Sairoh to assist the three companies together with the NPCC in the implementation and follow-up of the application of the improvement techniques.

The NPCC will also present its MUDA FREE Workplace (MFW) programme spread over a year to support companies in their journey towards making their workplace MUDA FREE. The MFW programme is an intensive improvement programme involving everyone in the organisation to work together to make improvements that impact productivity, quality, cost and delivery.
