Jul 12, 2008Launching of the 3 rd edition of Innovators Mauritius Award under an environmentally friendly theme The National Productivity & Competitiveness Council is launching the 3 rd edition of the Innovators Mauritius Award, on Saturday 12 th July 2008 at 17h00 at the MGI auditorium, Moka. The theme of the award will be announced at the launching ceremony, which will take place in presence of Honourable Dharam Gokhool, Minister of Education & Human Resources and revolves around "ile durable". Barclays Bank is the main sponsor for this event, and is supporting the media campaign over two months.
To sustain competitiveness, it is important that we have an innovative nation. The aim of the Innovators Mauritius Award is to develop a culture of innovation in all walks of life in Mauritius . The award will relate to innovations around the set theme which will give a new dimension to our lifestyle to ensure that our tomorrow is better than what it is today.
The award is open to people / businesses who can use their creative potentials and innovative ideas through products or processes and bring about innovative solutions.
The award is open to two category of participants:
Professionals and industrialists
General public including students
The first Innovators Mauritius Award was held in 2004 and had for theme: Sweet Mauritius and the second edition was held in 2006 with Green M: reduce, re-use, recycle as theme.
Dr. Romeela Mohee won the silver award in the industrialists and professionals category. Dr. Mohee developed a rotary composter, a recycling device that enables the sanitisation of organic wastes such as vegetable wastes, animal manure, food wastes, organic fraction of municipal solid wastes and others. Modified and used plastic drums, that would otherwise decayed on landfills, are used to produce high quality compost from organic waste.
Mrs Sadhana Ramanjooloo, the award winner in the general public category decided to group unemployed women to re-use the bits and pieces of fabric thrown away by tailors and textile industries, which would have otherwise landed in garbage bins to make patchworks and quilts that are today sold in hotels.
