InnovEd 2008

InnovEd (Innovation for the Education Sector) is a joint Ministry of Education & Human Resources (MOE& HR) and National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC) Project, which was launched in 2005.  The goal is to promote critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation among students.

InnovEd is open to all to all pre-primary, primary and secondary students in the Republic of Mauritius. Secondary schools have been categorized as lower secondary (Form 1- 3) and Upper Secondary (Form 4-6).  Secondary schools can register for both lower and upper category.

Participants are required come up with innovative projects which can be in the form of drawings, models or prototypes. All the students will have the chance to showcase their exhibits and win recognitions!

General Information

  1. Registration of schools

• InnovEd Registration Forms have been sent to all the schools by the Ministry of Education & Human resources of the zone. Forms may also be downloaded from this web-site.
• InnovEd is open to all pre-primary, primary and secondary students in the Republic of Mauritius. Secondary schools have been categorized as lower secondary (Form 1- 3) and Upper Secondary (Form 4-6).  Secondary schools can register for both  lower and upper category
• The forms should be duly filled and must be submitted on Wednesday 30 th January 2008 , the latest, to the Ministry of Education & Human Resources of the zone.
• On receipt of the Registration Form, the Ministry of Education & Human Resources will contact the school to give details about training being organized with regards to InnovEd.

2. Training

• The MOE & HR will contact all the schools to inform them about training being organized with regards to InnovEd.
• Training will be organized zone-wise.
• Teachers who have already followed the training course will have to attend a one day refresher course.
• Teachers who have never followed training in the 2007 edition will have to attend a two-day workshop.
• The head of school will have to delegate a teacher to follow the training being organized.
• The teacher will have to train other teachers in the school so that there is as a pool of facilitators for InnovEd to ensure smooth running – up of the project.

3. School Exhibition/ Selection

• Schools have up to the end of April 2008 to organize school exhibition/ selection to sort out the best innovation which will be sent for regional / national selection/ exhibitions. The exhibition will give students the opportunity to share their innovation with their peers
• For the purpose of school exhibition/ selection, a panel of jury would have to be mounted up at school level. It may include parents, heads of other schools, entrepreneurs etc.

4. Feedback Report

• A Feedback Report will be sent to all the participating schools by the MOE & HR of the zone.
• The Feedback Report should be dully filled and sent back to the MOE & HR of the respective zone.
• It is imperative that the Feedback Report should be returned on or before the prescribed deadline.
• Late entries will not be entertained.

5. National/ regional exhibition/ selection

• A national / regional exhibition/ selection will be organized in the last phase of InnovEd 2008 with the aim of giving full-due recognition to the young innovators.
• Regional exhibition/ selection will take place at the beginning of May 2008.
• National exhibiton/selection and the Award ceremony will take place at the end of May 2008.
• The details will be communicated to the schools by the MOE & HR of the zone.

6. Guidelines 

1.        For Heads of Schools

Step 1- Registration

Duties/ Responsibilities of Head of School

•           Project Coordinator at school/college level.

•           Partnering if needed

•           Organise exhibition at school.

•           Motivate teachers & students.

•           Plan, Organise & Monitor Project.

•           Send feedback report to NPCC

•           Send selected exhibits and students for regional/ national exhibition/selection.

2. For Teachers (Facilitators)

Step 1: Getting started with InnovEd

• The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that your school has been registered to participate in InnovEd.The head of school is the one who determines if your school will participate in InnovEd.
• If you are a participating school, your head of school will inform you when training is being conducted with regards to InnovEd in your zone.

Step 2: Training

• You will have to attend the training being conducted in your zone.
• Teachers who have never followed training in the 2007 edition will have to attend a two-day workshop.
• The head of school will have to delegate a teacher to follow the training being organized.
• The teacher will have to train other teachers in the school so that there is as a pool of facilitators for InnovEd to ensure smooth running – up of the project
• Once you get the training, you are advised to share the training acquired with other teachers of your school so that they can assist you in the project.
• Once you have constituted the team of facilitators it is up to you how to proceed with your students.
• Many schools have an assembly to introduce the program to students.

Step 3: School Exhibition/ Selection

• Schools have up to the end of April to organize school exhibition/ selection to sort out the best innovation which will be sent for regional / national selection/ exhibitions. The exhibition will give students the opportunity to share their innovation with their peers.

 3. Students

Step 1: Participation

• Your teacher / head teacher will invite you to participate in InnovEd 2008.
• Make up your mind if you want to participate or not.
• Make sure that you understand the rules for participation and abide to them.
• If you choose to participate, make sure that the name being provided for enrollment should be as per your birth certificate.

Step 2: Working on the project

• Your teacher will give you all the necessary guidance to participate in InnovEd 2008.
• Kindly follow the instructions provided.

Step 3: School Exhibition/ Selection

• A school exhibition/ selection will be organized in your school before the end of April 2008.
• Make sure that you are ready for this event with your drawing/ model or prototype and with the Innovator's Workbook.
• Also, be ready to answer any query about your innovation.

Step 4: Regional / National Exhibition/ Selection

• A national / regional exhibition/ selection will be organized in the last phase of InnovEd 2008 with the aim of giving full-due recognition to the young innovators.
• Regional exhibition/ selection will take place at the beginning of May 2008.
• National exhibiton/selection and the Award ceremony will take place at the end of May 2008.
• The details will be communicated to you by head of school/ teacher.

8. Rules and Regulations- Official Rules for InnovEd

  1. Eligibility.

• InnovEd is open to all pre-primary, primary and secondary students in Mauritius and Rodrigues.
• Secondary schools have been categorized as lower secondary (Form 1- 3) and Upper Secondary (Form 4-6). 
• Secondary schools can register for both lower and upper category.
• Each school is solely responsible for choosing its student representatives.
• There is no limit to the number of students who can participate.
• Student participation is voluntary - students who would like to participate should obtain the permission of the head of the school.
• Students may compete as an individual or as part of a team, but not both.
• Each team should not exceed 5 members.
• Students who have participated in the earlier editions of InnovEd may participate again- but must enter a completely new innovation .
• Innovations which have already been presented for other projects, conducted by other institutions cannot be entered for InnovEd 2008.

2. Deadline (s)

• All the given deadlines should be respected.
• There will be no extensions or exceptions to deadlines given.

 3. Participation Requirements

• Innovator's Workbook : Participants are required to complete an Innovator's workbook.
• Innovation
• Students must present a drawing/ model or prototype which illustrate how the innovation works.
• Drawing / model/ prototype must be fully set-up during the exhibitions/ selections.
• Students have to personally set up their innovations.

4. Judging

• Participants will be judged in 4 categories: pre-primary, primary, lower secondary (Form 1- 3) and upper secondary (Form 4- 6).
• All of the judges' decisions are final. No correspondence will be entertained by the NPCC.
•  Awards will be given in each category – pre-primary, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary.
• Each participant for InnovEd will receive recognition and a certificate.
• All innovations will be judged by the same criteria.
• Student(s) have to be present and prepared during the exhibition/ selection to make an oral presentation explaining his/her project.
•  For team entries, all members must be present at judging.

 5. Intellectual Property Rights.

• NPCC, Ministry of Education and Human Resources, the sponsors, the board members and judges for the project do not profit in any way from any innovation submitted by participants and have no rights, privileges or interest in any innovation submitted as part of the InnovEd project.
• Participants are cautioned that the exhibitions are opened to the public. As a result - all innovations will be deemed to be "publicly disclosed" at the exhibitions/ selections, which may make it necessary for participants to take steps to secure certain intellectual property rights in their innovations.
• "Public disclosure" is defined as the time any idea has been offered in an open environment.
• However, the NPCC and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources will make no representations, expressed or implied, regarding the protection of participants' intellectual property. All participants that wish to protect their invention assume sole responsibility for securing intellectual property rights.

6.  Photo Release

Participation in InnovED permits reasonable use of a child's name, photograph, or likeness; releasing  the  NPCC, the Ministry of Education and Human Resources and  the InnovEd sponsors from any and all claims, liabilities and/or damages arising directly or indirectly out of their participation.

  1. What is InnovEd?

3. Is there any financial aid /scholarship/grant provided to help me or the school to work on the project?

The NPCC does not provide any financial aid/ scholarship/ grant.

4. What are the awards?

Awards will be given in four categories- pre-primary, primary, lower secondary (Form 1-3) and upper secondary (Form 4-6). Otherwise, all participants will receive a recognition and a certificate. Everyone is a winner!

5. How types of  innovation should be submitted?

The innovation must be the original idea and work product of the student/ team, and must be in the form of a drawing/ model or prototype.

7. Who is eligible to enter?

Pre-primary, primary and secondary students in the Republic of Mauritius can participate in InnovEd 2008.  Students can participate on an individual/ team basis.

8. How many students can enter as a team?

A maximum of 5 members.
