Green School
Green School
The Green School Project (GSP) is based on the fundamentals of the NPCC’s Green Productivity Programme, which contributes towards sustainable development. It is a learning by doing project which inculcates the school population to care for the resources comprising the environment in the best possible way. The project not only involves students at school, but is also open to the school staff, Parent Teachers Association and ultimately to be extended to the community.
Objectives
-
Improve resource use efficiency
-
Facilitates the conversion of schools to green institutions.
-
Provides a platform for interaction and sharing of experience.
For Green Schools Program to be effective and self-sustaining, it is essential to adopt a structured approach:
Step – 1: Green Schools Team formation
A Green School Team comprising of students, teachers, parents, administrative staff is established to co-ordinate the programme at school level. A Green School Champion is
identified to lead the project.
Step – 2: Walk Through Survey
The walk through survey is conducted to understand the impact of the actions/activities of the participating school on the environment. This provides the school an opportunity to
understand the current state of affairs in and out of the school premises and identify areas for improvement.
Step – 3: Resource Utilization Assessment
This stage makes position for an assessment of the resource utilized in the school.
Step – 4: Green Schools Opportunity Assessment
The data generated in the above steps are compiled to represent the environmental performance of the school for necessary assessment.
Step – 5: Sustaining Green Schools Program
Sustaining Green Schools Program is a challenge. It is important to standardize, to measure and to continuously improve on existing ones.
Step – 6: The Green School Convention and Green School Award
The Green School Convention and Award needs to be organized to share the achievements of respective participating schools and experience and to recognize, reward the
outstanding participants/ teams/ schools...
Training for the GSP was conducted to 70 facilitators in March 2010 over two days. This year 35 schools registered to participate in the project. A pre-selection was effected in May 2010 whereby 14 schools were selected based on established criteria.
An audit was then carried out in the selected schools to monitor the implementation of the project at school level followed by a second selection procedure.
The best projects (10 in all) were presented at the National GSP Convention on 9th June 2010 and were assessed by a panel of jurors in the field. An Award ceremony followed the Convention and the best project were rewarded on 9th June 2009.
The winners for the 2009 Convention was Royal College of Port Louis and 2010 were Mahatma Gandhi State School Flacq. The State Informatics Ltd designed a ‘Green Game’ that were distributed to all schools present.
