ICT Applications
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is the processes, applications
and equipment we utilise to access, create, organise, analyse, present and communicate
information. Text, sound and images are the building blocks of ICT
Using ICT Smartly
In line with the government vision of converting Mauritius into a cyber island,
NPCC has established an ICT programme that aims to gear the whole nation for
an Information and Communication Technology(ICT) culture. Moreover, research
shows that in America ICT has been the single factor for productivity growth
in recent years with computers and websites as the vital components of development
programs. In order to promote ICT as a productivity tool in Mauritius, the NPCC
has been carrying out the following projects
Projects:
A project on computer literacy for primary schools was run from April to September
2001 by the NPCC at the University of Technology of Mauritius in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research and Mauritius College of the Air. This served as a model for the Computer Proficiency Project, established by the Task Force on e-education, and for which the NPCC
has been designated as the legal entity for implementation.
Register now for the CPP course.

B) LINUX and Open Source
This project is to spread the use of Linux operating system which has the advantage
of being free and requiring modest personal computing resources for operation.
As a server operating system, LINUX has proved to be robust, stable and reliable.
The Linux project being carried out at NPCC gave rise to the idea of looking
for other open source software that can be exploited. This project will be driven
by three main thrusts:
1. ICT Applications Area, for CPP trainees to experience with OpenSource and
have access to Internet for information searching.
2. Development Area, for Mauritians with IT-Skills level 4 or above to collaborate
and create innovative software using OpenSource. This will give opportunities
to Mauritians to participate in international awards.
3. Hardware Area, for those Mauritians wanting to provide ICT support(technicians).
D) E-learning on Productivity
This project is to provide training in digital format so that it can be accessible
to a wider public and therefore be both a bridge for both instructional and
geographical gap.
This project is to showcase the use of OpenSource software as webserver and
mail server for NPCC.
F) ICT for Women
This project is mainly to show how ICT can be applied by Women for achieving Better Living.
