Green Productivity

In order to make Mauritius a productive nation, the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC) has set a vision, to make better living for the nation. To achieve this goal, NPCC has adopted a mission, to make Mauritius work, together. Mauritius being a small country, establishing productive partnerships between government, businesses, workers and society is the best strategy, to achieve the mission.

In line with the Vision and Mission of NPCC, productivity and competitiveness are the focus areas for Mauritius . Green Productivity or GP is a strategy that makes the productivity ‘sustainable'. An attractive feature of GP is that it leads to gains in profitability through improvements in productivity and environmental performance.

Under this programme, business enterprises and the community are being targeted to address both production and consumption patterns. Awareness raising, skill building and piloting or showcasing are some of the strategic tools.

Programme design

While designing the Green productivity programme, stocktaking has been carried out, by the NPCC, of GP-like interventions in Mauritius to understand the lessons learnt avoid duplication and encourage extension of some of the proven good initiatives. A series of consultations with key stakeholders in the business and community sectors were carried out in July 2007. The objectives of these consultations were to:

•  Present the GP concept, its need and benefits to industrializing countries like Mauritius

•  Explain the project objectives and approach

•  Seek views and suggestions from the stakeholders and invite their ideas and/or concerns in enhancing the project through discussions and group based workshops

Following the stakeholders meetings, four priority areas have been identified for implementation in the near future: Green Productivity Counselling for industry (GP Clinic), Implementation of Green Schools, Design and Implementation of a conducting Green Productivity Clinics (GPC) for Businesses and Community in Mauritius
