Green ProductivityGREENING THE SCHOOLS IN MAURITIUS, AN INITITIATIVE TO MAKE A BETTER TOMORROW, THROUGH THE GREEN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME (GSP)
Objective/Purpose
- To facilitate the conversion of schools and institute structures to green buildings ( institutions that incorporate cleaner / safer materials, practice green procurement, operate keeping energy and resource efficiency in mind and think of ways to minimize / recycle their wastes and thus follow GP principles )
- To bring together school management, teachers, educationists, students and the community at large on a common platform that could also facilitate participation and consensus in many other areas of governance and business
- To also create a success story cases for new schools and institutions to design and plan their establishments using a GP approach
- Eventually, create a third party award and certification programme on Green Schools
- To develop in parallel, a practical and meaningful content based on Green Productivity (in theory and practice) for the educational curriculum and thus plant seeds for a more GP conscious professional community in the years to come. This will enable mainstreaming of environment into core business functions to achieve triple bottom line improvement in Mauritius
A guidance manual for Teachers, on how to teach environmental issues and GP in schools. Manual will also contain various methods, apart from class room teaching that can be used by teachers.

- Field visits to some of the GP interventions of NPCC
- Role playing and management games
- Extracurricular projects / exercises
- Seminars and group work
Primer on environmental issues of today and potential solutions
- How human lifestyle affects environment, local to global issues on environment, specific issues in Mauritius (biodiversity, corals, industrial pollution, sewage and municipal solid waste issues, what can we do to change the situation…..
Implementation of one pilot has been conducted in one school after a brainstorming of problems related to environment and an action plan has been created to address the issues of waste disposal and poor management of the space that was a major problem in that school. The plan consists of a series of interaction that will be carried out throughout the year to sustain the actions and sensitization of the school population is also being carried out.
This programme has both short term and long term benefits.
