CPP

What is CPP?

CPP stands for computer proficiency programme. CPP is a nationwide training program approved by government. It aims at making all the segment of the population proficient in using computer. The NPCC has been designated as legal entity for its implementation, and a steering committee, chaired by the director of JEC (Joint Economic Council) oversees the smooth running of the project.

How did the program start?

This program has been designed along the same lines as the project initiated by NPCC on Computer Literacy in Primary Schools. The objectives were among the others:

  • To promote exposure to computer in the primary schools,
  • To bring together students, teachers and parents to the computer centre, where they are initiated to using computers by learning through fun,
  • To show how an institution can optimise the use of underutilised, computer for the benefit of the school or the community.

The NPCC acted as a synergiser and enlisted the collaboration of the University of Technology and the Mauritius College of the Air in the project. The head teachers, teachers and parents who were sensitised on the importance of spreading IT culture showed commitment right from the start, and contributed in making this project a success.

All targeted objectives were attained and in November 2001, 51 primary school teachers received their certificates. The success of the project inspired the adoption of the Computer Proficiency Programme at the national level.

Why should one be computer proficient?

The government is aiming at transforming Mauritius into a cyber island. This means that computer proficiency will be essential to every Mauritian whether at the level of household, the classroom or the work place. The ultimate objective of the CPP is to spread IT culture at all the level of Mauritian Society from teacher to student, the unemployed, and the working population and community at large using existing resources as far as possible.
In today’s world, learning IT is as essential as learning to read and write was in old days

Who can benefit from the training?

Anybody. No prior background in IT is needed. Understanding of English is desirable.

Who conduct the training?

All the trainers are IT teachers/professionals who have followed the CPP train-the-trainer course run by the University of Mauritius.

Where and what time the training is conducted?

The programme is run in the computer labs of 30 State Secondary Schools which have been upgraded to cater 20 trainees at a time. The courses are held between 16:00 to 18:00 or 18:00 to 20:00 hours on the alternate week days. Another session is held on Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00 hours

How long does it take to become computer proficient?

Twenty-four sessions of two hours are scheduled. They are spread over a period of 2 to 3 months depending on whether the course is followed once (Saturdays only), twice (Tuesdays & Thursdays) or three times (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays) a week.

What does one learn in these 24 sessions?

At the end of the course the participants will be able to use the computer in their daily life. They will be able:
1. To produce a document containing text, table, figures, pictures and graphs
2. To organise data in simple database including sorting and ranking data.
3. To make use of multimedia tools for creating presentations
4. To use Internet for searching some information on website and to send and receive emails.
5. To use the knowledge and skills acquired during the CPP as a foundation for more advanced IT studies

Do the participants get a certificate at the end of the programme?

A certificate of completion will be issued to all the participants who attended at least 22 sessions of the course.

How much do the participants have to pay?

The course is offered at the subsidised rate of Rs 700 per participant. This fee includes a printed study manual.

How can one register for the program?

Anyone who wishes to enrol for the course must fill the registration form and pay the training fee before the course begins. For primary and state secondary school teachers the fees will be paid by the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research. Registration forms are available at the office of the CPP, NPCC Knowledge Centre and for teachers in all primary and state secondary schools.
